Here in Canada, today is a day to appreciate trees. So today I want to share my top 9 interesting facts about trees.
- Colombia’s Supreme Court was the first to give legal rights to trees (the Amazon), to be protected, conserved and restored.
- It has been proven that trees do communicate with each other in many ways. One example is when a willow tree is attacked by webworms, it will emit a chemical that other willows near by react to by creating more tannin which makes it more difficult for the webworms to digest it’s leaves.
- Trees filter the rainfall and help with irrigation and errosion.
- It has been noted that the crime in some cities has decreased with an increase of tree canopy. Not only that but residents living with trees surrounding their buildering report 25% less domestic agression and violence.
- Hugging a tree is actually good for humans. When you hug a tree, your body releases hormones that helps you to feel calm and happy.
- Trees can live for thousands of years.
- All the branches of a tree put together are equal to the width of it’s trunk. This is called Da Vinci’s Rule of the Trees.
- Big trees share nutrients with smaller trees who then pay them back when they are better established.
- Urban trees are growing at a rate of 25% faster than trees in rural settings due to heat island effects.

Trees have the power to heal the world. For that I am in awe and I am very grateful to live among them.

Thank you trees!

Happy National Tree Day 2019!
